May 2026 · Mother's Day
For the Mothers Who Would Not Receive Flowers This Year
Mother's Day is traditionally a celebration of love, appreciation and family. But for many mothers around the world, it is also a painful reminder of someone who is no longer there.
In May 2026, Diamond STEM dedicated its Mother's Day fundraising initiative to mothers experiencing grief, isolation and loss. Our hearts were particularly with Iranian mothers who had lost their children amid the violence and repression surrounding protests in Iran, as well as mothers internationally facing Mother's Day without their children.
While many families were preparing flowers and celebrations, we wanted to acknowledge the mothers who would not hear their children's voices, receive their embraces, or be given flowers that year. Our youth decided to turn compassion into action.
Young volunteers created handmade items, introduced their crafts to community members, engaged visitors in meaningful conversations, and raised funds through their work.
The event coincided with Iranian community protests outside the Central Library, which generously provided space for Diamond STEM's youth-led fundraising activities. It gave young people an opportunity to witness the importance of community participation, human dignity, empathy and peaceful civic engagement.
The fundraising was not simply about collecting donations. It was about recognizing grief that is too often unseen, and showing that young people can respond to difficult events with kindness and purpose.
“Not every mother receives flowers on Mother's Day. Some are waiting for a child who will never return. This year, our youth chose to remember them.”

Community makes it possible
Making room for opportunity
The Salvation Army
Shared community space and collaboration make our Friday program possible. We are grateful for this welcome; the contribution is space, not financial sponsorship or bus tickets.
Richmond Hill Public Library
The library supported fundraising locations at Central Library, Oak Ridges and Richmond Green, helping volunteers bring community initiatives into public spaces.
Our volunteers & supporters
Diamond STEM reports that earlier Nowruz and Mother’s Day fundraising helped cover classroom-space costs. Technology and bus fares remain separate needs in our current funding request.
Small Hands. Courageous Hearts. Meaningful Change.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to the Central Library for supporting our community initiative and generously providing space for our youth-led activities. Community spaces make it possible for young people to transform their ideas into meaningful public action.”
Our Youth. Our Community. Our Responsibility.
At Diamond STEM, education extends beyond classrooms. We believe young people learn leadership by practising it, compassion by demonstrating it, and community responsibility by participating in it. From celebrating cultural traditions to honouring mothers experiencing unimaginable loss, our youth are learning that meaningful change begins with the willingness to care.
“We are not only preparing young people for their future. We are empowering them to make a difference today.”
